[Time Is] is one of Henry van Dyke's best known poems. It was first published in the 1904 collection, and was better known as a reading at the funeral of Diana in 1997.

This poem is very concise and leaves a lot of lingering impression. In other versions of the poem, 'not' is also written as 'eternity'.

After reading this poem, I chose a picture.

I think it's a poem that sensibly expresses the relative and subjective nature of time. I think it's going to be too hard to find a picture that feels like a perfect match for this poem, but I still chose this one.

Now this is a manuscript of it.

I transcribed this poem with a Waterman fountain pen.

Time Is   By Henry van Dyke

Time is

Too Slow for those who Wait,

Too Swift for those who Fear,

Too Long for those who Grieve,

Too Short for those who Rejoice;

But for those who Love,

Time is not.

Then I'll show you the original version of this picture.

I also took this picture on March 16, the same day I posted it on my blog here before. It was a pretty bright sun-lit plum blossom, but I used spot photometry to take a dark picture of the surroundings.

For the next picture, I will post pictures and poems with a more different atmosphere. 🤗

This is the poem [Heart, we will forget him] I transcribed this time. I think this poem by Emily Dickinson is a beautiful expression of the heart that struggles to forget love. I think the object of love can be an old lover or an object of nature.

Heart, we will forget him

By Emily Dickinson

Heart, we will forget him

You and I, tonight.

You may forget the warmth he gave,

I will forget the light.

When you have done, pray tell me,

That I my thoughts may dim;

Haste! lest while you're lagging,

I may remember him!

Emily Dickinson is a hidden poet, who was lonely and wrote many poems, but whose true value was not known until later. Born in 1830, she lived until 1886, and is known to have published only a few poems while she was alive.

I chose a picture that matches this poem and edited it in the way Experiment04.

Heart, we will forget him

I tried to emphasize my longing by making the darkness a little thicker in the direction this plum flower is looking at. And here, I tried to emphasize the disconnection, which is the mind to forget, by ripping up the picture.

Now, I'll show you the original photo.

The background in that picture is an apartment window. It is also the warmest and quietest place in the neighborhood where apricot flowers bloom first. 🌺

Congratulations! You won an Honorable Mention in TIFA 2023 Photo Competition!

I received an e-mail under the above title on January 6, 2024.

The picture that I won HM here in the contest is the color version of the picture that won HM in AnalystSparks 2023.

I mentioned this picture in my previous blog post. So let's look at the color version picture.

It's my first time applying for
TIFA 2023 Photo Competition. It's the same photo, but I'm honored to be able to receive the award by registering with a different edit.

TOKYO INTERNATIONAL FOTO AWARDS is an international photography competition based in Tokyo, Japan. It has held a photography competition since 2016 and has been holding an annual exhibition of award-winning works.

It's aimed at photographers all over the world, but I already have bifa or mifa, so I'm guessing it's a photo contest that focuses more on Asian photographs.

Next, let's take a look at the certificate in this picture.

Leave a link to the winners page.

TIFA 2024 is currently open, and if you apply by April 30th, a 10% discount will be applied, so please apply.

Experiment02 - Crumple paper

Today, I'm going to post a picture of my work done in the experiment02. I take several pictures first, then edit them in my experiment. Then I read a good poem and write this poem myself with a pen. After I finish writing the poem, I pick a picture that matches this poem and post it on my SNS.

Let's take a look at the original picture first.

I edited this picture in the experiment 02 method.

This photo was taken on Oct. 29, 2023, at Guri Hangang Civic Park in South Korea. It was a warm fall day, not cold yet. The intensity of the sunlight was just right for taking pictures.

Today's poem I transcribed is Splendour in the grass. This poem is part of the Ode: Intimations of Mortality from collections of early children, published by William Wordsworth in 1807.

Splendour in the grass

(from Stanza 10 / Ode: Intimations of immortality from recollections of early childhood)

By William Wordsworth

What though the radiance which was once so bright

Be now for ever taken from my sight,

Though nothing can bring back the hour

Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;

We will grieve not, rather find

Strength in what remains behind;

In the primal sympathy

Which having been must ever be;

In the soothing thoughts that spring

Out of human suffering;

In the faith that looks through death,

In years that bring the philosophic mind.

From now on, I will transcribe good poems and sometimes post posts linking my photography work. 😊

I won an HM at Budapest International Foto Awards 2023  in Nature-Flowers (Non-Professional) BIFA2023 / The Flower Of The Universe 02

You might think it's the same as what I wrote a few days ago, but I got 2 HMs in the same photo contest. 😅

So this time, I will show you the certificate first.

This time, I applied under the title [The Flower Of The Universe 02] and won a HM. I'll show you two pictures on WINNER's page.

Now, I'll show you the original picture.

https://budapestfotoawards.com/winners/hm/2023/93-27973-23/

If you look at this picture, the colors look like a mixture of purple and pink. The original color of the flower was not like this, but when I printed it out on a broken printer, the blue ink line broke and it didn't come out, so the color turned out wrong. I felt good because the color seemed to be printed more beautifully.

The reason why I named this photo like [The Flower Of The Universe 02] is because the flowers look like they are receiving the energy of the universe by opening their leaves. And in fact, [The Flower Of The Universe 01] is a black and white edited photo.

I edited this photo according to the way I work with experiment 21. Please refer to my blog post for a detailed explanation of this.

Experiment23 description

1. First, Need a slightly broken printer 🙃

2. Print out color & bnw picture

3. Check the scan results and work again

Scan results B&W

Scan results Color

The reason why Experiment23 was created is as follows. This started when the printer at my home suddenly broke down and the blue color wasn't output properly, causing the printouts to have strange colors or stripes.

Even now that I think about it, I was very surprised when I saw the printer's results. I was wondering whether I should repair or replace the printer, but when I looked at the print results again, the idea of making this a work method occurred to me.

It's already been over a year since the printer slightly broke down, but it hasn't been fixed yet and I'm still using it well. 😂🤣

I strangely liked the results coming from this broken printer. Sometimes it shows a dreamy atmosphere, and sometimes it creates photos that have a sharp feel. And sometimes I am surprised because the colors are very different from the original. 🧐

Now let me show you the original photo.

If you compare the scanned copy with the original digital photo, the print appears to have lighter colors. Sometimes those printers produce very different colors. I will talk about that again next time.

Last year, I received an HM in this contest, and I'm very happy to win this year as well. Perhaps I'll try to challenge this contest every year so that I can get a higher award.

This time again, the award category is Nature-Flowers (Non-Professional).

The title of this award-winning photo is 'Cosmos In Black'.

Then I'll show you the original picture.

If you keep an eye on this photo, you can see that the cosmos leaves look like crowns. I originally took the photo in color, but I changed it back to black and white.

If you look closely at the side of the cosmos standing in the main, you can see another cosmos faintly.

I'm using Fujifilm camera X-T4 and I'm using Capture One as a photo editing program. It's a useful and easy-to-use program for black and white conversions or other filters.

First, I'll link the page where you can see this picture for yourself.

Next, let's look at the certificate.

And Budapest International Foto Awards 2024 [BIFA2024] has opened. If you enter by April 10, 2024, you will get a 5% discount. Link to the main page you can support. Then I wish you all the best.

The picture above is one that often appears and mentions on my blog, because it's affectionate, and it's even more so because it's a picture that I won in a photo contest.

In the last explanation, the color photo was not mentioned, so I added a color photo this time.

Now, I'm going to show you the original color and the black-and-white photo.

I mentioned the process or date of taking this photo last time,
so I'll replace it with the link below.

I love this editing method, and I work with it frequently. And I've been working with it this way, and I was even more excited to win the photo contest, as I introduced you last time. Here's another link to the previous article.

https://idea0404.blogspot.com/2024/03/analogsparks-2023-hm-fine-art.html

I submitted this photo not only to the last AnalogSparks2023 contest, but also to other contests, and I'm waiting for the results. I'll have to wait and see what the results will be.

Experiment22 Work is very similar to Experiment21 Work. Sometimes it's hard for me to tell just by looking at the results. When I place a mirror on the back of the picture and scan it, the scanner's light is reflected by the mirror behind the picture and comes out more clearly. This work has the effect of highlighting the subject a little more. 🙏

There are so many photo contests all over the world. Every year, new photo contests appear. Some websites offer information about these numerous contests on a deadline.

So how can your photos be selected from so many photo contests? If you search on Google, there are a lot of good tips and advice. There are also a lot of advice from photo editors and former judges of photo contests.

I'll tell you how to prepare in detail for the photo contest based on my experience.

1. Find your favorite Photo Contests

I take pictures of flowers. So I looked for photo contests that could support flower photos. I was also able to find flower photo applications in nature and animal photo contests, and in large contests, I was also able to find photo applications with categories that could only support flower photos.

You can also find detailed categories of scenery and street photos, and other photo contests with their own purpose.

Like this, you first figure out which categories of your favorite photos and the photos you're currently taking, and then choose two or three photo contests that fit.

2. Register your membership on the photo contest site

Once you register as a member on the photo contest website, you'll receive regular e-mails. So you can receive information about when the photo contest is held, when the deadline is, what topics the contest is held, when the actual winners' works can be viewed, and when the exhibition is.

Smithsonian magazine Annual Photo Contest

3. Read the contest rules carefully and follow them

Most photo contests have set photo image file specifications, so please follow them. The size and capacity limits of the images submitted are stipulated in the contest rules, and the scope of editing is also mentioned. It is said that there are more cases than expected that they are excluded from the screening if they do not follow this.

In addition, there are rules on whether it is possible to apply duplicately to other photo exhibitions with the same photo image or whether it is okay to post personal SNS such as Facebook, so please comply.

 INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS™

4. Analyze the winning entries of the previous year

If you analyze the winning works of the previous year, you can see how you should take a picture and what kind of story you should show with that picture.

Guess the atmosphere and storytelling in the picture. Also, read the title and the author's description. It will help you a lot and you will learn a lot from them.

Sony World Photography Awards

5. Apply for an objectively noticeable photo

If you run a personal SNS or homepage, apply with photos that you liked a lot and received positive responses from others when you posted them there. I can assume that judges collect and reduce the number by looking at so many photos in an instant. The final selection is also hopeless if you say no to collect from the beginning. Therefore, it is a good idea to analyze the judges' tendencies and past works.

6. Don't worry about the prize money

The bigger and more famous competitions, the prize money cannot be won unless you are first or second in the category.

If you are too disappointed that you didn't receive the prize money for the photo contest, your willingness to apply for the contest itself will decrease.

7. Just do it

Just give it a go. If you don't do it, you won't get anywhere near that dream.

Experiment21 description

1. Print out color & bnw picture

2. Look at the composition of the picture and think about whether to choose a gem or express it in a circle

3. Put the picture on the scanner, place the jewelry, or put the water bottle behind the picture

4. Open the top panel of the scanner and scan it

If you look at the results, it may seem a little unfamiliar, but I would appreciate it if you could see it as an effort to highlight the topic.
This photo was taken on Saturday, July 1, 2023. It was such a hot summer day that I got this photo at Yulgok Park in Paju, sweating profusely.

Fujifilm    X-T4    F7.1    1/210s    ISO160    451mm

First of all, I'll show you the original version of this photo.

The wildflower managed to maintain its beautiful water form even on very hot summer days. Another flower is looming over the back, which makes it look rather mysterious.

I'm a little disappointed that I can't see the faint flowers on the back in the 21st edition of the experiment.

Experiment 21 aims to highlight the subject more prominently while scanning the photo so that it can be viewed intensively. It is somewhat different from the original because the surroundings or background cannot be seen well.

  Experiment20 description

1. First, place a mirror on the back of a flower or object and take a picture so that the back can be seen

2. Print out color & bnw picture

3. When scanning two pictures, place the mirror in the middle or against the other side

4. Check the scan results and work again

Scan results

This picture is a picture of a color and a black-and-white photo folded in a circle and scanned with a mirror in the middle. It looks a bit like a collage, it looks like an abstraction.

The original work placed a mirror on the back of an actual flower and photographed the front and back of the flower together. This project started with an attempt to show the front and back together in a photo. If I have a chance, I will upload a picture of the original work next time.

I will show you the original photo for the photo above.

This photo was taken on Sep. 9, 2023, at an indoor butterfly garden in Seoul Forest Park, South Korea. This butterfly garden was nice to see a lot of butterflies that were quite big and had colorful wings.

You can also see beautiful butterflies in the picture above, and you can see that the size of the butterflies is quite large compared to the size of the flowers.

I won a HM in the flower category of IPA 2023 contest.

The International Photography Awards™ is a photography contest that is famous for its many categories and its supporting works are quite high quality.
For that reason, the entry fee for this photo contest is much higher than other contests.

On the evening of September 21, 2023, I received an email with the following title.

[Congratulations, you have been awarded an Honorable Mention in IPA 2023!]

This is official Winner Seal/Logo. I really liked the design of this, so I was even more happy. This time, I will show you the original picture.

This photo was taken in early fall on Sep. 8, 2022. The location was Guri Hangang Park in Guri, Korea. When I took this photo, I was focusing on one cosmos, and after that, the cosmos, which was a little far away, shone like a shadow, showing the image of hugging the cosmos in front of me. I didn't miss that moment.

Fujifilm    X-T4    F7.1    ISO160    80mm

Next time, I'll show you a page where I can see my picture. I'll also link it to the bottom.

* Additional writing

There is currently a page open to apply for this photo contest. If you are interested, please apply for this contest.

The early bird discount period is over, but you can officially apply for the contest until mid-June.

I wrote a more detailed story in my blog post, "World BEST TOP 4 PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITIONS". Please participate.

 Experiment19 description

1. Print out color & bnw picture

2. put the color picture on top of the black and white picture

3. I'm going to rip the picture that's on top

4. Scan with scanner while posting the torn picture

If you look at the scan, it may look a little complicated and quite messy. You might feel like you're looking at a kind of complex, dizzy arrangement of cells. I started working on this with considerable intention.

 / Scan Results

The results of the scan are as follows. The picture above shows the scanner's lid tightly closed and pressed to scan, making the color photographs look flat. In the picture below, I scanned the broken color photographs by slightly lifting the lid of the scanner to make them look more three-dimensional.

In my personal opinion, I prefer the second one. 😅

Next, I will show you the original photos of the pictures above.

If you look at these original photos, you might ask, "Why do you have to edit it like that?"

I wanted to show in this one picture the complicated and detailed process of sprouting from seeds and becoming a single flower rather than wind or raindrops in the atmosphere of this static photo.

This picture was taken on May 20, 2023. Roses are the most beautiful May.

ABOUT ME

I have been photographing as a hobby and I am active in Guri,Korea. For my own expression method, I take various flower photos and use a scanner to work on photography. So a small flower in the soil became a pleasant secret in my heart.
