오늘은 한글날 2024년 10월 9일 훈민정음 어제 서문을 필사하다 Transcribe the preface of Hunminjeongeum

Every year, today is Oct. 9, a day to celebrate the creation of Hangul by King Sejong of Korea. Hunminjeongeum is the old name of Hangul, and it is the title of a book that King Sejong explains how to create and use Hangul.

Hangul is a sound letter that consists of 28 letters. It is known to be very scientific and easy to read and write. Although many foreigners find it difficult to learn Hangul only because of its many ways of expressing it or because there are many words that have double meaning in the same letter, Hangul itself is an easy-to-write and easy-to-read language.

So today, I transcribed the preface of Hunminjeongeum to celebrate Hangeul Day.


훈민정음 어제 서문

나라의 말이 중국과는 달라
문자와는 서로 맞지 아니하므로
이런 까닭으로 글을 모르는 백성들이 
말하고자 하는 바 있어도
마침내 제 뜻을 능히 펴지 못할 
사람이 많으니라
내 이를 위하여, 가엾게 여겨
새로 스물여덟 자를 만드노니
사람마다 쉽게 익혀 날마다 씀에 
편안케 하고자 할 따름이니라

The speech of our country is different from China and as a result does not coordinate well with written Chinese characters. Therefore, even if the ignorant masses have something to say, they are unable to express it in writing. Out of consideration for them I have created these 28 letters so that all people may learn them with ease and use them in their daily life.
